Ahmedabad, May 3 (NationPress) Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins expressed that the team 'can cling on to some hope' regarding their future, despite being nearly eliminated from playoff contention following a 38-run defeat to Gujarat Giants in Match 51 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 held here on Friday.
Half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler helped Gujarat set a formidable target of 224/6 during their innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Although Abhishek Sharma scored a commendable 74 runs, the remaining batters struggled, leading to a total of 186/6 in their chase.
With only three victories from ten matches this season, Sunrisers' hopes hinge on the results of other games. Nevertheless, Cummins remains optimistic, noting that the mega auctions in 2024 have solidified the team's core for the future.
“Our batting during the power-play wasn't optimal. I share in that blame, as we possibly allowed them to score an extra 20-30 runs. We also missed a couple of catches. Chasing 200 seemed more feasible. They are exceptional batters; if you deliver poor balls, they capitalize on them,” Cummins stated in the post-match presentation.
“We likely bowled too many bad deliveries. The pitch was excellent. Achieving 140 runs in the last 14 overs was commendable from our bowling unit. Sharma played well, and Nitish contributed towards the end. We fell a bit short for the batters. Yet, we can hold on to some hope. The major auction last year ensures that the core group will remain intact for three years,” Cummins added.
With this victory, Gujarat ascended past Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) into second place in the points table, thanks to their superior run rate. RCB is set to face Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, a match that could significantly impact the standings for Gujarat Titans.
