Punjab Kings (PBKS) batter Pyla Avinash has declared himself a match-winner in the making, saying his fearless, instinct-driven batting is the quality he intends to carry into the Indian Premier League (IPL) — while adding the layer of responsibility that the competition demands. The young Andhra Pradesh cricketer, picked up by PBKS for ₹30 lakh, is building on three consistent domestic seasons that culminated in a stunning unbeaten 105 off 58 balls in the Andhra Premier League.

The Innings That Changed Everything

Avinash's breakthrough knock featured 11 sixes, including five in a single over — a display of raw power-hitting that put him firmly on the franchise radar. Yet, by his own admission, an IPL call-up was the last thing on his mind when he walked off that day.

'After scoring that 100, I never thought that I'd be in the IPL setup because it was just all instincts. I wasn't thinking long enough,' Avinash said. 'It was all disbelief until I went to the trials. I did well in the Punjab trials, got shortlisted, and after they picked me, I was literally shocked. It's a different kind of feeling which I can't explain.'

The selection came after three successive seasons in the Andhra Premier League, during which Avinash built a reputation for consistent, aggressive batting. Being spotted before he had broken into the national spotlight made the franchise's faith all the more significant for him.

Settling Into the IPL Environment

Transitioning into the IPL setup — surrounded by established names and international legends — could have been daunting for a first-timer. Avinash, however, said the PBKS management made deliberate efforts to keep him comfortable both on and off the field.

'PBKS owners kept me in a very good space. They were really kind to me in all scenarios. Our head coach, our owners, and all the staff looked after me very well because it was my inaugural season,' he said. 'There are so many instances where they kept me really comfortable in all situations.'

That support structure, he noted, was crucial in helping him absorb the step-up in intensity without losing the instinctive quality that got him there.

Learning Under Ricky Ponting

One of the more surreal aspects of Avinash's early IPL journey has been working under head coach Ricky Ponting — an Australian batting great he grew up watching on television. The transition from spectator to student has left a clear impression on the youngster.

'His attitude and commitment towards the game really surprised me. There are times I used to sit and talk to him about the game, the mindset, and all the technical aspects,' Avinash said. 'He didn't tell me so many big things, but he made small, small changes which really helped me in the way I am batting right now.'

Alongside Ponting's coaching, Avinash has spent two years studying how senior players assess bowlers and situations from the dugout — quietly building a tactical vocabulary to complement his natural aggression.

The Mindset: Fearless, Not Reckless

Avinash is clear that fearlessness is non-negotiable to his identity as a batter — but he draws a distinction between fearless and reckless. 'I still feel fearless is my thing, which I don't want to stop. But I can't be more reckless about it. I want to be more responsible and fearless,' he said.

That clarity extends to every ball he faces. 'I'll have a clear mind while batting, even if it is the first ball or the last ball. It's just instinct we get from practising a lot and executing well in the match,' he added. His ambition stretches beyond power-hitting: he sees himself as a match-turning force when his team is under pressure. 'If I am there in the race, the match is ours. I think of myself as a match winner,' Avinash said.

Family Roots and the Road Ahead

Behind Avinash's rapid rise is a formative influence closer to home — his elder brother, who introduced him to cricket and served as mentor, guide, and daily motivator. 'If he hadn't started playing cricket, I don't think I would have had that vision or the support from the family. He is the main reason I am here right now,' Avinash said.

From an Andhra Premier League century that he never expected to translate into an IPL contract, to learning the finer points of the game under Ponting and training alongside seasoned professionals, Avinash's journey is entering a decisive new chapter. With his attacking instinct intact and a growing sense of match awareness, the PBKS camp will be watching closely to see whether that self-belief converts into performances on the biggest domestic stage in Indian cricket.
