Qingdao (China), Feb 13 (NationPress) The men's singles contender Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and the women's doubles duo of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly staged a valiant comeback from a two-match deficit to keep the team competitive, but ultimately, India fell 2-3 to South Korea in their second match of Group D at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2025 on Thursday.
With both teams already having secured spots in the knockout phase, the clash was set to decide the group champion. India faced a rocky start as the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapil and Tanisha Crasto, along with women’s singles player Malvika Bansod, lost their matches.
The national Games double gold winner, Sathish, rejuvenated India's hopes by triumphing over Cho Geonyeop with scores of 17-21, 21-18, 21-19.
Then, the world No. 9 duo of Gayatri and Treesa further ignited optimism for an Indian victory by defeating Kim Min Ji and Kim Yu Jung with scores of 19-21, 21-16, 21-11, leveling the tie at 2-2.
India made another adjustment by pairing Satwiksairaj Rankireddy with MR Arjun in men's doubles against Jin Yong and Na Sung Seung. Although they struggled initially, they fought hard in the second game but eventually lost 25-23.
In the previous edition of the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship, India also suffered a 2-3 defeat to China in the semifinals, returning home with a historic bronze medal from the tournament.
