Liverpool, Sep 11 (NationPress) Two-time Asian champion Pooja Rani and World Boxing Cup Astana gold medallist Jaismine Lamboria achieved notable victories, ensuring two additional medals for India in the World Boxing Championships.
Pooja triumphed over Poland’s Emilia Koterska with a score of 3:2 in the women’s 80kg quarterfinals, while Jaismine showcased her skills by defeating under-22 Asian champion Mamajonova Khumorabonu from Uzbekistan with a decisive 5:0, securing her place in the women’s 57kg semifinals.
India has sent a 20-member team to the inaugural World Championships, organized under the new international governing body for boxing, World Boxing, aiming for a strong performance in both men’s and women’s categories.
Also, Nupur, a gold medallist from the World Boxing Cup Astana, was the first Indian to guarantee a medal by reaching the women’s 80+ kg quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Additionally, two other Indian boxers, Meenakshi (women’s 48kg) and Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (men’s 50kg), are just one win away from clinching medals, with their quarterfinal matches scheduled for Friday.
In a closely contested women’s 80kg bout, Pooja relied on her experience to overcome the speed and agility of her younger rival. Although the Polish boxer led in the initial round, Pooja turned the tide in the second round and maintained a strategic approach to secure her semifinal spot.
In the women’s 57kg matchup, Jaismine quickly gained the upper hand, preventing the Uzbek boxer from finding her rhythm and sustaining her lead throughout the three rounds.
However, it was a disappointing end for former world champion Nikhat Zareen and World Boxing Cup silver medallist Abhinash Jamwal. Nikhat faced the formidable two-time Olympic silver medallist Cakiroglu Buse Naz of Turkey in the women’s 51kg quarterfinals, putting up a brave fight, but ultimately, the judges favored her opponent.
Subsequently, Jamwal suffered a 1:4 defeat against Paris Olympics bronze medallist Guruli Lasha from Georgia in the men’s 65kg quarterfinals.
