Council Bluffs (USA), June 28 (NationPress) Emerging Indian badminton stars Tanvi Sharma and Ayush Shetty continued to showcase their remarkable skills at the US Open badminton tournament, advancing to the semifinals with impressive displays in the BWF Super 300 event.
Sixteen-year-old Tanvi triumphed over higher-seeded Malaysian player Karupathevan Letshanaa, winning in straight sets with scores of 21-13 and 21-16 in just 33 minutes.
Ayush exhibited a commanding performance as well, defeating junior world champion Kuo Kuan Lin from Chinese Taipei with a score of 22-20, 21-9 to secure his place in the semifinals.
However, India faced a setback in the men’s doubles category, where Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi were eliminated by the Taiwanese duo of Chiang Chien and Wei Wu Hsuan-yi, losing 9-21, 19-21 in their quarterfinal match at the Mid-America Centre on Friday.
In the semifinal, Tanvi will compete against Polina Buhrova of Ukraine, who caused an upset by defeating the third seed Sung Shuo-yun from Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals. This marks Tanvi’s inaugural semifinal appearance at a BWF World Tour Super 300 event.
Ayush will face the top seed Chou Tien-chen, a seasoned opponent who previously bested him at the Taipei Open. Despite the formidable challenge, Ayush can draw confidence from his strong performance in 2025, which included semifinal finishes at both the Orleans Masters and the Taipei Open.
Earlier, Tanvi had outperformed Thailand’s Pitchamon Opatniputh, ranked world No. 58 and the 2023 junior world champion, with a score of 21-18, 21-16 in straight games during the quarterfinal.
On the other hand, Ayush achieved a hard-fought victory over compatriot Tharun Mannepalli, world No. 54, with scores of 21-12, 13-21, 21-15 in the men’s singles round of 16.
