Is the England-India Mixed Disability Series a Triumph of Cricket's Unyielding Spirit?

New Delhi, June 28 (NationPress) India’s mixed disability cricket team has made a remarkable stride this week by playing at the Mecca of Cricket, Lord’s, for the very first time. This match is part of the ongoing Vitality I20 Mixed Disability Series against England and represents a significant milestone for a team that has been competing in mixed disability cricket for nearly eight years. This event also marks India's official introduction into this format on a global scale.

Currently, England is leading the seven T20 series 3-1; however, it was indeed a proud moment for India as the men in blue achieved their only victory in the last over at Lord's during the third T20.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, skipper Ravindra Sante shared his thoughts on the importance of such opportunities and how the team is committed to breaking barriers and inspiring future generations.

“Representing our country at the iconic Lord’s is a moment of immense pride and honor for the Indian Mixed Disability Cricket Team. This series transcends mere competition; it is a celebration of ability, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of cricket. As the upcoming matches approach, I feel incredibly excited and motivated.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our skills and demonstrate how far we have progressed as a team. I am determined to give my utmost on the field. My gratitude extends to everyone involved—organizers, supporters, and all who advocate for disability cricket. With the IT20 series, we aspire to break barriers, establish new standards, and inspire the next generation,” Sante told IANS.

This event is the culmination of years of effort by the Disability Cricket Council of India (DCCI), which has aimed to unite players with physical, intellectual, and hearing impairments. The team’s presence at Lord’s is being regarded as a significant breakthrough for mixed disability cricket in India, a format that has yet to gain mainstream recognition.

In collaboration with the DDCI, Svayam—a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating a barrier-free world for all—has been instrumental in paving new opportunities for individuals affected by disability. “This is a mixed disability format, India’s first team of its kind, and I would like to extend my thanks to Svayam for facilitating our journey to England. They have not only sponsored us but have also physically supported and cheered us on,” Sante added.

Enhancing the occasion, Sminu Jindal, Founder-Chairperson of Svayam, was invited by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to address the audience at the esteemed Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Speaking on behalf of India before officials from seven cricket boards, she highlighted the need for stronger initiatives towards inclusive sports planning, focusing on access, opportunity, and visibility.

“The fact that this is taking place at Lord’s is no coincidence; it symbolizes inclusion in a venue that has hosted cricket's most defining moments,” stated Sminu Jindal.

Meanwhile, the Indian men's cricket team is also touring England at this time, with both teams representing the country in distinct formats and dialogues. One aims for a series victory while the other advocates for inclusion.

During her speech, Sminu Jindal announced that Svayam will host India’s inaugural National Summit on Accessible Sports and Tourism this November. The summit will assemble voices from policy, sport, hospitality, and disability rights to forge a unified action plan, particularly as India prepares its bids for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.
