London, June 26 (NationPress) India's Mixed Disability Team showcased remarkable resilience, clinching a thrilling two-wicket victory over England in a nail-biting finish at Lord's during the third T20I of the Mixed Disability Vitality seven-match IT20 series at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground.
This historic match marked the first-ever international Disability game at the 'Home of Cricket.' The date and location coincidentally echo a significant moment in cricket history, as just 42 years earlier, India, under the legendary Kapil Dev, secured the 1983 World Cup at Lord's on June 25.
“We dedicate our team’s historic win to Kapil Dev sir’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad,” expressed Ravi Chauhan, the general secretary of the Differently-Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI).
In a moment of tribute, both teams donned black armbands to honor the late former Indian left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who passed away on Monday in London.
Interestingly, June 25 is celebrated as 'World Mixed Disability Day.' The match at Lord's was part of Cricket Disability Day, making it the largest showcase of disability cricket, marking the first encounter between the Mixed Disability teams of India and England at this prestigious venue.
Conducted under the auspices of the MCC, ECB, and Lord's Taverners, this game was the highlight of the series.
Despite trailing 2-1 after losing the first two matches at Taunton and Wormsley Cricket Club, India's Mixed Disability team rebounded strongly. For the first time, all seven matches of the series are being streamed live on Sony Liv.
The match featured outstanding performances from seamer Vivek Kumar (three wickets for 16 runs in three overs) and captain Ravindra Sante (three for eight in four overs), restricting England to a mere 123 for nine in 20 overs after the hosts opted to bat first.
England's A Brown stood out with a brilliant half-century (77 off 47), contributing significantly, including a partnership of 35 runs for the ninth wicket with A Pyle (4 not out), allowing England to surpass the 100-run mark. Brown smashed two sixes in the last over bowled by spinner Tarun, providing some respectability to the total after they had stumbled to 49 for seven in 12 overs.
India, facing a fierce comeback from England, reached the target in the final over, losing eight wickets in the process. The standout performer of the chase was middle-order batter Sai Akash, who scored 44 runs.
With four more matches remaining in the series, the next game is scheduled for Friday (June 27) at Worcester.
Brief Scores: England's Mixed Disability team 123-8 in 20 overs (A Brown 77; Vivek Kumar 3-8, Ravindra Sante 3-8) lost to India's Mixed Disability team 124-8 in 19.1 overs (Sai Akash 44) by two wickets.
