Paras Mhambrey, India’s former bowling coach who was integral to the 2024 triumph under Rohit Sharma, expresses confidence in the team's depth and leadership to defend their title. Before India kicks off its title defense against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, Mhambrey shared exclusive insights with IANS regarding the team's chances, Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy, and the dynamics of competing in a major event on home ground. Q. With the 2026 T20 World Cup just a day away on home soil, how do you assess India's chances of defending the trophy won in 2024?

A. I’m very pleased and confident. Observing the team's progression over the past few years and the quality of cricket they are playing is remarkable. The last series and even the warm-up game against South Africa were fantastic to witness, showcasing the team's approach.

It’s encouraging to see the core group from the last two years still intact. Having experienced players is crucial for a World Cup. The return of Tilak Varma to the team and his outstanding performance is a positive sign. Overall, we are thrilled with our progress. It’s a day-by-day approach, but given the Indian team’s current form, expectations are soaring.

Q. Reflecting on June 2024, which moments from the victorious World Cup campaign still give you chills?

A. The title of world champions is incredibly significant. Every player representing their country values this title. It’s a special honor, particularly because the World Cup is held every four years. The opportunity to contribute to such a memorable campaign and be part of that team is something I cherish deeply.

Q. The 2024 World Cup-winning squad had unique chemistry. How much of that has transitioned into the 2026 team?

A. It’s evident on the field. Each player understands their role clearly, and everyone has contributed at crucial moments. Entering the tournament, it’s essential to have fit players, and it's great to see we have the best 15 to choose from. Retaining the experienced core is vital as they can handle the tournament's pressures better.

Q. With Suryakumar Yadav leading this Indian side, how do you perceive his balance between captaincy and being a destructive batter?

A. He is managing it exceptionally well. He has settled into his role and is balancing the responsibilities of captaincy with his performance. It’s a challenge to satisfy both personal and team expectations, but I’m impressed with how he’s adapting.

Q. Hosting a World Cup has its pressures and benefits. What do you believe will be the key factor for India – crowd support, familiarity with conditions, or current form?

A. All three elements are crucial! The backing of the home crowd is invaluable, especially during tough times. Familiarity with local conditions, like the behavior of different pitches, also plays a significant role. Most importantly, the team’s recent form and the contributions from all players will be vital in ensuring success.

Q. Which team do you think presents the toughest tactical challenge for India in this tournament?

A. That’s a tough one! Historically, tournaments can be unpredictable. While favorites often falter, teams like Sri Lanka have shown they can be competitive, especially playing in familiar conditions. It’s essential to approach every game with caution.

Q. On a scale of cautiously optimistic to supremely confident, where does this Indian team stand heading into the World Cup?

A. I’m supremely confident. The style of cricket they are playing is impressive, and having all players available adds to that confidence. We have covered all bases, and given their past performances, I am optimistic about our chances.
