New Delhi, April 16 (NationPress) The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, has emphasized the power of sport to unite in the face of escalating global tensions, calling for policymakers to protect its neutrality and independence. During her address at the EU Sport Forum held in Cyprus, Coventry asserted that sport remains a unique platform capable of bridging political and cultural divides.

Referring to the forthcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, Coventry highlighted that international sporting events serve as a stark contrast to the divisions prevalent in today’s world. “Sport — and especially the Olympic Games — stands as a counterpoint to the separations we observe globally. It creates a rare environment where individuals interact not as opponents but as fellow human beings, fostering a much-needed atmosphere of peaceful competition,” she remarked.

However, she warned that this vital role can only be maintained if sport is insulated from political meddling. Stressing the significance of autonomy, Coventry pointed out that athletes can only truly inspire and perform in a neutral environment. “Athletes can only motivate us if they are allowed to compete freely. This can only happen if we maintain sport as a strictly neutral venue, free from political dominance on the field. We must ensure the autonomy of sport is upheld so that every athlete, regardless of their origin, can compete without external political interference,” she stated.

Addressing European leaders directly, she urged for ongoing support in maintaining these principles. “I urge the EU and its Member States to uphold the principles you have frequently acknowledged: honor the autonomy of sport and back the political neutrality of the IOC and the Olympic Games. Only then can the true power of sport be realized,” she added.

Coventry also underscored the broader societal significance of sport, referencing the inclusive, solidarity-driven European model that encourages grassroots participation. She advocated for the European Union’s future sports strategy to bolster these principles, emphasizing the crucial role community-level sports play in enhancing social cohesion.

Moreover, she highlighted the economic and health advantages tied to physical activity, portraying it as an effective, low-cost strategy for disease prevention and mental well-being support. “Physical activity is not merely a lifestyle preference; it is one of the most impactful, budget-friendly tools for preventing illness and bolstering mental health,” she asserted.

In concluding her address, Coventry expressed hope regarding sport’s enduring role as a unifying force. “If we adhere to the principles and values that bring us together, I firmly believe that sport can continue to fulfill its purpose in our societies, and the Olympic Games can serve as a beacon of hope for everyone,” she concluded.
