New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) The Gujarat Titans (GT) have revealed the re-signing of Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka to take the place of New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips, who has been forced to withdraw from the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to an injury.
Shanaka, who was previously associated with the GT team during IPL 2023, is rejoining the franchise for a fee of Rs 75 lakh. Despite a modest performance in his last season, where he played only three matches scoring 26 runs and not bowling, the 32-year-old brings essential international experience and recent form to a team that has faced challenges with consistency this season.
This marks Shanaka’s second term in the IPL, both with the Gujarat Titans. His former season in 2023 yielded limited success and minimal game time under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. However, with Shubman Gill now at the helm, Shanaka will be eager for a more significant role, especially considering the team's need for enhanced balance and experience in the middle order.
Glenn Phillips, acquired by GT for Rs 2 crore during the auction, unfortunately did not participate in the IPL 2025 season before being ruled out due to injury. Although recognized for his powerful hitting and bowling capabilities, the New Zealander remained on the bench throughout the season as Sherfane Rutherford was favored in the playing XI. Nonetheless, he did contribute as a substitute fielder in the early matches.
Shanaka arrives at the IPL following a successful run in both franchise and domestic cricket. He recently showcased his skills for the Dubai Capitals in the International League T20 (ILT20), where he played a key role in securing the title, amassing 164 runs in 10 innings at an average of 27, along with four wickets. His all-round abilities were crucial for the Capitals' success and highlighted his capacity to perform under pressure in T20 formats.
After his stint in the ILT20, Shanaka also participated in Sri Lanka’s domestic red-ball tournaments, taking part in the National Super League 4-day competition for Dambulla and the Major League Tournament for Sinhalese Sports Club.
