Leadership Takes Center Stage in IPL 2026 with All Indian Captains
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) In a historic first, all ten franchises in the IPL will be captained by Indian players in the upcoming season, which kicks off on Saturday. Former cricketer and national selector Jatin Paranjape believes this unique situation heightens the tournament's intrigue from a leadership angle.
“This IPL season is particularly noteworthy regarding leadership. It’s the first time in a long while that every team is headed by an Indian captain. We have Ruturaj Gaikwad at CSK, Axar Patel at Delhi Capitals, Shubman Gill at Gujarat Titans, Ajinkya Rahane at KKR, Rishabh Pant at Lucknow, Hardik Pandya at Mumbai Indians, Shreyas Iyer at Punjab Kings, Riyan Parag at Rajasthan Royals, Rajat Patidar at RCB, and Ishan Kishan at Sunrisers Hyderabad,” Paranjape remarked.
“What’s fascinating is that each captain is at a different career juncture, and all of them are entering a critical phase. Some are stepping into a leadership role for the first time, while others have more experience under their belts. However, they will all face the challenge of maintaining their teams' morale throughout this lengthy tournament,” Paranjape told IANS on Friday, just before the opening match between RCB and SRH at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Given the diverse range of experience among the captains, Paranjape, who is also a co-founder of KheloMore and a member of the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee, believes the two-month tournament will scrutinize each skipper in unique ways.
“The IPL has always served as a showcase for players, but this season also emphasizes leadership. Observing how these captains manage pressure, meet expectations, and unite their teams over the next two months will be of great interest. This is where we will likely witness the emergence of the next generation of leaders for Indian cricket,” he added.
