Abu Dhabi, Dec 16 (NationPress) The Lucknow Super Giants faced disappointment in their pursuit of Sri Lankan talent Matheesha Pathirana, ultimately watching him join the Kolkata Knight Riders. Nevertheless, LSG conveyed their contentment with their auction strategy, successfully acquiring vital international players that meet their team needs.
Owner Sanjiv Goenka emphasized the successful recruitment of Wanindu Hasaranga and Anrich Nortje as part of a meticulously planned bidding strategy during the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
Pathirana made headlines during the initial bidding, attracting a staggering Rs. 18 crore from KKR. His presence ignited a bidding frenzy between the Delhi Capitals and LSG, with the figure surpassing Rs. 15 crore. After Delhi withdrew, KKR entered the race, ultimately securing the 22-year-old pacer at an impressive Rs. 18 crore.
Having debuted in the IPL with the Chennai Super Kings, Pathirana played with them until the 2025 season.
Commenting on losing Matheesha to KKR, Goenka stated that they extended their efforts to the maximum to secure him as he was a top priority, but it didn’t pan out. “Indeed, both our captain and vice-captain were eager for Matheesha Pathirana, as was I. We were equally interested in Anrich Nortje. Pathirana was our primary target, and we reached up to ₹17.8 crore, which was our limit — we couldn’t stretch our budget any further. When Anrich Nortje came up later, we were pleasantly surprised and thrilled to acquire him at his base price. Overall, it was a well-considered and strategic decision,” Dr. Goenka shared on JioHotstar’s Match Centre Live Auction 2026.
Goenka elaborated on their auction strategy and achievements thus far, indicating that they are on track to meet their essential objectives.
“We are very close to achieving our primary targets. Our objectives included securing a quality international leg-spinner and a reputable international fast bowler. Wanindu Hasaranga was our first-choice leg-spinner, and for the fast-bowling position, it was between Matheesha Pathirana and Anrich Nortje. We are delighted to have secured two players from our shortlist of three, making us extremely pleased with how the auction has unfolded,” he added.
