New Delhi, Nov 13 (NationPress) The three-time IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have officially appointed Shane Watson, a former all-rounder from Australia, as their new assistant coach in preparation for IPL 2026.
Previously, Watson served as the assistant coach for Delhi Capitals (DC) alongside Ricky Ponting during the IPL 2022 and 2023 seasons. He will now join the revamped KKR coaching staff, which is headed by Abhishek Nayar and includes mentor Dwayne Bravo. His initial task will involve providing insights on KKR’s retentions before the November 15 deadline and gearing up for the mini auction in Abu Dhabi set for mid-December.
“Joining a franchise as legendary as Kolkata Knight Riders is a tremendous privilege. I have always respected the enthusiasm of KKR fans and the team’s dedication to excellence. I can’t wait to collaborate closely with the coaching team and players to help secure another title for Kolkata,” Watson remarked in a statement released on Thursday.
Watson is renowned as one of the most skilled seam-bowling all-rounders, having represented Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20 Internationals, amassing over 10,000 runs and taking more than 280 wickets across all formats.
A two-time Men’s ODI World Cup champion in 2007 and 2015, Watson was celebrated for his match-winning prowess with both bat and ball. His IPL career is equally impressive, playing in 145 matches from 2008 to 2020.
During his IPL tenure, he scored four centuries and clinched championships with Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. He was also honored as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2008 and 2013 seasons.
“We are excited to have Shane Watson join the KKR family. His extensive experience as both a player and coach at the highest levels will significantly enhance our team culture and preparations. His expertise in the T20 format is exceptional, and we eagerly anticipate his contributions both on and off the field,” stated Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders.
