Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is set to advance as initially scheduled. However, the involvement of certain international players will be decided by the franchises, as revealed by an IPL official to IANS. This announcement comes in light of some uncertainty regarding the participation of foreign players as the tournament approaches.
While a few international athletes are currently sidelined due to injuries, others may opt out for workload management purposes. The Delhi Capitals have stated that they are awaiting a decision from Cricket Australia regarding Mitchell Starc's participation, as he has not yet received a No Objection Certificate (NOC), and they are closely monitoring his workload.
Ultimately, the responsibility for confirming player participation rests solely with the franchises.
"It is the franchises' decision to determine the involvement of certain international players who are currently absent from the tournament. Only the injured players have not joined their teams, while some others are addressing workload issues. The IPL will proceed as planned and with all the excitement that fans expect," the IPL official mentioned to IANS.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar confirmed that Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana will miss the early matches of IPL 2026, returning only in mid-April. Similarly, Pat Cummins will also arrive late, with Ishan Kishan, a World Cup winner from India, stepping in as interim captain. Moreover, Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka is expected to join the Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Sam Curran, who has been ruled out due to injury.
Despite these challenges, the league remains optimistic about a seamless commencement, assuring that the tournament will maintain its grandeur and excitement when it kicks off. The 19th season of this lucrative event, featuring 10 teams and a total of 74 matches, is slated to begin on March 28, with a thrilling opening match between the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
