Sri Lanka Cricket Board to Implement Fitness Tests for IPL 2026 Participation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Colombo, March 20 (NationPress) The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has announced that it will implement compulsory fitness tests for its players ahead of issuing No Objection Certificates (NOC) for their involvement in the forthcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which kicks off on March 28.
This decision arises as a number of Sri Lankan athletes, selected by various franchises, are in the process of recovering from injuries.
As per a report from Cricbuzz, the evaluations are slated to occur early next week in Colombo, with only those who achieve the necessary fitness benchmarks being permitted to participate in the IPL.
Among the notable players awaiting approval are bowler Matheesha Pathirana (Kolkata Knight Riders), seasoned spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (Lucknow Super Giants), left-arm fast bowler Eshan Malinga (Sunrisers Hyderabad), and Nuwan Thushara (Royal Challengers Bengaluru).
In total, seven Sri Lankan players have been signed for the upcoming season. Other players include Dushmantha Chameera and Pathum Nissanka (both from Delhi Capitals), along with Kamindu Mendis (Sunrisers Hyderabad).
Officials from multiple IPL franchises have indicated that they will receive updates on the Sri Lankan players following their scheduled fitness assessments.
"Fitness tests are set by the SLC on Monday and Tuesday, and we will learn about our players only after that," franchise officials told Cricbuzz.
Several of these athletes, including Pathirana, Hasaranga, Malinga, and Thushara, had partially or fully missed the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup due to injuries. Hasaranga, in particular, has been out of action since February 8 after sustaining a left hamstring strain during a match against Ireland. Pathirana participated in three games before being sidelined.
Due to these injuries, Sri Lanka, despite being the host nation for the T20 World Cup in 2026, exited in the Super 8s. Nevertheless, they performed admirably in the group stage, securing three victories out of four matches, including a win over the 2021 champions, Australia, marking their first exit from the group stage.
