IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals Set to Bring in Shanaka as Curran's Replacement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 22 (NationPress) The Rajasthan Royals (RR) are reportedly in discussions to acquire Sri Lankan seam-bowling all-rounder Dasun Shanaka for the upcoming 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This move comes as a direct response to the injury of Sam Curran, who has been sidelined due to a groin issue.
As the inaugural champions of the IPL, RR is set to kick off their IPL 2026 journey against the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on March 30. According to a franchise official speaking to IANS, "Discussions regarding Shanaka's addition to RR are progressing well. While a few formalities remain, this transfer appears to be virtually finalized and is moving in a positive direction."
Shanaka was overlooked during last year's IPL auction held in Abu Dhabi but later secured a contract with Lahore Qalandars for the forthcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at a price of PKR 75 lakh. Should this transfer be confirmed, he will become the second player, following Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani, to transition from the PSL to IPL this year. Corbin Bosch, a seam-bowling all-rounder from South Africa, made a similar move last year, leading to a one-year ban from the PSL for his transfer from Peshawar Zalmi to Mumbai Indians.
The decision to sign Shanaka is viewed as a strategic replacement for Curran, aided by the familiarity of RR's head coach Kumar Sangakkara with Shanaka, stemming from their shared Sri Lankan heritage. Additionally, RR's assistant coach Vikram Rathour has firsthand experience working with Shanaka during Sri Lanka's successful run to the Super Eights in this year's Men’s T20 World Cup, where Shanaka impressed with two half-centuries.
Previously, Shanaka participated in the IPL 2023 with Gujarat Titans as a substitute for the injured New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson, scoring 26 runs across three matches. He was again signed by Gujarat Titans in 2025 as a mid-season substitute for the injured New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips, although he did not get any playing time.
