Karachi, April 20 (NationPress) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a one-year ban on Sri Lankan seam-bowling all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, preventing him from competing in the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to a breach of his contractual obligations.

This decision comes after the PCB reviewed Shanaka's withdrawal from the 2026 tournament with Lahore Qalandars, which he opted out of to fulfill an agreement with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2026. Shanaka had been signed as an injury replacement for Sam Curran by RR for Rs 2 crore during the current season.

“I sincerely regret my choice to step back from the HBL PSL and I extend my heartfelt apologies to the people of Pakistan, the fans of HBL PSL, and the entire cricketing community,” Shanaka stated.

“The HBL PSL holds great prestige, and I fully recognize the disappointment my actions have caused. To the dedicated supporters of Lahore Qalandars, I am genuinely sorry for my failure to meet your expectations.”

“At the time of my withdrawal from the HBL PSL, I had no plans to participate in any other tournament. I hold immense respect for the Pakistani fans and have always cherished my time in Pakistan. I look forward to returning to the HBL PSL in the future with renewed commitment and the trust of the fans,” Shanaka expressed in a statement released by the PCB.

Following Shanaka's exit, Daniel Sams, an Australian seam-bowling all-rounder, was acquired as his replacement by the Qalandars. “The review determined that the player's unilateral decision to withdraw from the tournament on March 21, 2026, amounted to a clear violation of both the Player Registration terms and the Tripartite Agreement. The findings indicated that the withdrawal was made on grounds not recognized within the existing contractual framework,” the PCB stated.

“While the Board acknowledged the player’s expressions of regret and his stated enthusiasm for playing in Pakistan during the formal hearing, the seriousness of the contractual breaches necessitates regulatory action to uphold the integrity and exclusivity of the League.”

“Effective immediately, Dasun Shanaka is deemed ineligible to participate in the next edition of the HBL PSL (PSL 12), set for 2027,” the PCB announced.

In the past, Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani also opted out of his contract with Islamabad United in the PSL to play for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. After the PCB imposed a two-year ban on him, Muzarabani’s agent contested that a binding agreement between the league and the player had been established prior to signing the IPL contract.

Point of View

The ban on Dasun Shanaka by the PCB underscores the importance of adherence to contractual agreements in sports. This action reflects the PCB's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the PSL, despite Shanaka's regret and apologies.
