Monterrey, March 1 (NationPress) Head coach Graham Arnold has expressed strong confidence in the Iraqi football team, declaring that they aim to astonish the world after securing their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with an exhilarating 2-1 victory over Bolivia in the decisive qualifier held at Monterrey Stadium on Wednesday.

This qualification is a monumental achievement for Iraq, marking only their second participation in the World Cup and their first since the 1986 FIFA World Cup. In their last appearance, they were eliminated in the group stage after suffering three losses.

Iraq has been drawn into a challenging Group I, facing off against the 2022 World Cup runners-up France, alongside Senegal and Norway during the group stage.

Reflecting on the draw, Arnold recalled his experience against France while coaching Australia at the 2022 World Cup. “Before considering our match against France, I must mention my previous encounter with them while leading the Australian team, where we lost 4-1. However, we utilized that experience as motivation to overcome Tunisia and Denmark and advance to the round of 16,” he stated post-match, as reported by Goal.com.

The coach emphasized that Iraq will approach this tournament with a relaxed mindset. “As the Iraqi national team, we have nothing to lose. We must enter the World Cup with a winning mentality; that is the only path to success,” he added.

Arnold also highlighted the thrill of playing against elite athletes on an international platform.

“Sharing the pitch with players like Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland is a tremendous honor for our athletes. We will respect their skills, but we will step onto the field aiming for victory and to surprise the world,” he remarked.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of this achievement for Iraqi football.

“Qualifying for the World Cup is a significant honor for all players, who will relish the opportunity to compete against some of the greatest names in football. We aim to give our best to please our supporters and showcase Iraqi football on the global stage,” Arnold stated.

Iraq will kick off their journey in the FIFA World Cup 2026 on June 16 against Norway at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. They will then face France on June 22 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Iraq will wrap up their group-stage matches against Senegal on June 26 at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario.
