ISL 2024-25: Punjab FC Secures Agreement with Greek Striker Petros Giakoumakis

Mohali, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Indian Super League (ISL) team Punjab FC has officially announced the addition of Greek forward Petros Giakoumakis for the ongoing 2024-25 season. Giakoumakis, who previously played for the Greek second-division club Makedonikos, has committed to a 6-month deal that extends until May.
The 32-year-old Giakoumakis hails from Heraklion, Crete in Greece, and developed through the youth system of local club Olympiakos Chersonissos. His professional journey began with Greek Super Division side PO Atsaleniou in 2011, where he played for three seasons.
In 2014, he joined APO Levadiakos, making a total of 117 appearances for the club over five seasons. Throughout his career, he has predominantly played in Greece, with the exception of a loan spell at Olympiakos Nicosia in Cyprus. Giakoumakis has also represented several clubs, including Atromitos, Veria NPS, PAS Lamia, and Ionikos Nikeas.
Commenting on the acquisition, Punjab FC's Technical Director Nikolaos Topoliatis stated, “Petros aligns with the profile of the striker we sought for the remainder of the season. He brings valuable experience, and I anticipate he will enhance our performance on the pitch. I extend my best wishes to him for a successful season with the club.”
Currently, Punjab FC occupies the eighth position in the ISL standings with 18 points and is set to compete against NorthEast United in their upcoming match tomorrow in Guwahati.
Originally named Minerva Punjab, the club was taken over by RoundGlass Sports Pvt. Ltd in April 2020 and finished as the runner-up in the I-League during their inaugural season. Punjab FC clinched the I-League title in the 2022-23 season with a decisive 4-0 victory over Rajasthan United in March 2023, securing their promotion to the ISL for the 2023-24 season. They successfully maintained their position in the ISL for the 2024-25 season by finishing eighth in their first year.
