New Delhi, May 5 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu remarked that the collaboration between Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting is proving to be an effective combination in the Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) roster during IPL 2025, propelling them to second place in the points standings with seven victories from 11 matches.
As captain, Iyer and coach Ponting previously joined forces at Delhi Capitals, where they successfully led the team to the playoffs in 2019 and finished as runners-up in 2020. Their reunion at PBKS has revitalized the franchise, bringing them close to playoff qualification for the first time since the 2014 season.
“Shreyas is familiar with Ricky from their time at Delhi (Capitals). Their mutual understanding is crucial. A captain must have a strong rapport with the coach; both must align to navigate the long tournament,” Rayudu stated on ESPNCricinfo. “Shreyas respects Ricky’s aggressive strategy, making this partnership a fitting one for Punjab. He has also made significant strides as a batsman,” he added.
Former New Zealand women’s wicketkeeper Katey Martin opined that Iyer resonates better with Ponting’s coaching style compared to when the legendary Australian was associated with Delhi Capitals under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy up to IPL 2024.
“Ponting emphasized team-building around the captain leading into the auction. With Iyer scoring runs, he’s translating that success into effective captaincy and builds confidence for the team,” Martin noted.
“In contrast, Pant struggles with confidence and run-scoring, adding pressure as a wicketkeeper. A keeper relies on the team, and Nicholas Pooran seems to be the next in line for leadership,” she added.
Recently, PBKS secured a decisive 37-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants, placing Shreyas’ team within reach of a playoff spot.
