Kochi, March 25 (NationPress) Kerala Blasters FC has officially announced the hiring of David Catala as the club's new head coach on a one-year contract, ensuring his role at the club extends until 2026.
The Spanish coach, known for his innovative style of play and vast experience in European football, will begin his duties immediately.
A former central defender, Catala had an impressive playing career, accumulating over 500 professional appearances in Spain and Cyprus before moving into coaching. His management history includes positions at AEK Larnaca and Apollon Limassol in the Cypriot First Division, NK Istra 1961 in the Croatian First Football League, and CE Sabadell in the Primera Federacion. He now aims to leverage his skills and leadership to elevate Indian football and drive Kerala Blasters FC towards ongoing achievements.
"It is a tremendous privilege to join Kerala Blasters FC. This club embodies an unparalleled passion, a community that lives for football, and a supporter base that makes every game an event. The goals are clear—this is a club that is destined for success, and we will pursue that with unwavering determination.
"Kaloor’s vibrancy and the prestige of this esteemed club require nothing short of excellence. I am eager to begin and connect with everyone at the club. Let’s go, Blasters!" remarked Catala in a statement released by the club.
In December, the Blasters parted ways with head coach Mikael Stahre following a challenging start to the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season, where the 'Manjappada' recorded only three wins in their first 12 matches and were positioned at 10th place at his exit.
Following Stahre's departure, T. G. Purushothaman took over as interim head coach and guided the Yellow Army to an eighth-place finish for the season.
"David impressed me with his commitment and ambition to reach new heights for himself and Kerala Blasters. I believe in his capability to manage the team and maintain unity during challenging times. His composure and skill are precisely what our club requires at this crucial juncture. Wishing David the very best in this new endeavor," said Sporting Director Karolis Skinkys.
