Brisbane, Oct 27 (NationPress) Australia opener Usman Khawaja has expressed his support for Matthew Renshaw as his potential opening partner in The Ashes. He believes Renshaw is currently in peak form, ready to seize the opportunity and score valuable runs.
Renshaw kicked off his summer with a century during Queensland’s Sheffield Shield opening match against Tasmania in Brisbane, positioning himself as a strong candidate to bat alongside Khawaja in the upcoming Ashes series starting on November 21 in Perth.
Having played 14 Tests for Australia, Renshaw has accumulated 645 runs at an average of 29.31, with a career-best score of 184 against Pakistan during the 2017 New Year’s Test at the SCG. His last Test appearance was in February 2023, and he hasn't opened the batting since 2018.
"I believe our ideal lineup features Marnus Labuschagne at three, Steve Smith at four, and Travis Head at five. If Renshaw is selected, he is in the best mindset to take on Australia again and is prepared to make runs," Khawaja stated during a press conference in Brisbane ahead of the Sheffield Shield clash against NSW scheduled for Tuesday at the Gabba.
"Of course, I may have a personal bias as he is not only my opening partner but also a good friend. He has experience, having scored 184 for Australia. His journey of being in and out of the national team fosters growth, as I can attest. He learns from these experiences and will be ready when the opportunity arises again. Whenever Rennie gets a chance, I’m confident he will be prepared.
"His recent performances in the one-day matches have been impressive, displaying his ability to handle pressure effectively and always looking the part at the next level. You can sense he truly belongs at this elite level.
Khawaja also emphasized the importance of Marnus Labuschagne at No. 3, highlighting his prolific track record in Tests and his strong start to this season's domestic competition.
"I value having Marnus in the squad; he brings immense energy. Our best team includes him. He has adjusted his training routine by hitting fewer balls than usual, which allows his mind some rest before games. Previously, he would practice for an hour in the morning, but now he understands the significance of balance in preparation,” Khawaja remarked.
