New Delhi, June 9 (NationPress) Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden asserts that the left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has the potential to become a pivotal bowler for India, capable of securing 20 wickets in the upcoming Test series against England, commencing on June 20 in Leeds.
The retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin from international cricket opens the door for Kuldeep to establish a consistent presence in the Test arena in England. His unique left-arm wrist-spin technique adds an X-factor to India’s bowling lineup. To date, Kuldeep has participated in just 13 Tests, claiming 56 wickets.
“As we look ahead, I’m eager to see how India performs in England. A five-match Test series is a rigorous test of character. We’ve discussed this before — a player like Kuldeep Yadav could emerge as a crucial bowler, taking 20 wickets for them,” Hayden commented.
“We've seen the advantage of Nathan Lyon’s reliability, and his absence during the last Ashes highlighted the significance of having a dependable spinner. Historically, the greatest teams have shared one common trait — stability,” Hayden remarked at the launch of the Australian Summer of Cricket 2025/26.
Before the India-England Test series takes the spotlight, Australia will face South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord’s from June 11-15. Hayden contends that Australia’s bowling unit is superior, citing their dominance during the 2023-25 cycle.
“We still have a solid core group in the team, but transitions are beginning to happen. The future of players like Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja is uncertain. These are pivotal figures in the team — individuals who have faced the same crossroads that Virat Kohli and I have experienced,” he added.
“However, for this cycle, Australia has been an exceptionally dominant team. My perspective is that winning a Test requires taking 20 wickets — and this team possesses a world-class pace trio akin to Steve Waugh’s era. They also have an elite spinner in Nathan Lyon, whose skill has been integral to the structure of Australian teams,” he concluded.
