Bulawayo, July 8 (NationPress) - Zimbabwe fast bowler Kundai Matigimu has incurred a fine of 15 percent of his match fees due to a breach of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing second Test against South Africa at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
The incident occurred on Day 1, specifically during the 72nd over of South Africa’s innings, when Matigimu intercepted a ball in his follow-through and threw it at batter Lhuan-de Pretorius, striking him on the wrist from a close distance.
Subsequently, Matigimu was found to have contravened Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “throwing a ball (or any other piece of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
The charge was filed by the on-field umpires, in conjunction with the third and fourth officials. Matigimu accepted the charge and the penalty proposed by match referee Ranjan Madugalle, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thus bypassing the need for a formal disciplinary hearing.
According to an ICC statement, "Matigimu admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Ranjan Madugalle, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing."
In addition to the fine, Matigimu received one demerit point, which will be recorded on his disciplinary record. This marks his first offence within a 24-month timeframe, limiting the immediate consequences. However, additional violations could result in more severe penalties under ICC regulations.
Meanwhile, South Africa declared their innings at a dominant 626/5, with Wiaan Mulder remaining unbeaten on a record 367 and subsequently bowling out Zimbabwe for 170 in their first innings, followed by 51/1.
