Leeds, July 19 (NationPress) - Leeds United has completed its fifth signing of the summer with the addition of Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United. The seasoned midfielder has signed a four-year contract at Elland Road.
Longstaff joins Leeds after making 25 appearances in the Premier League last season for the Magpies, playing a pivotal role in their qualification for the Champions League. He was instrumental in breaking a 70-year trophy drought at St. James’ Park by winning the League Cup.
“I recall playing here as a young child, around nine or ten years old. It’s amusing how life takes its turns. To be back here now with the club’s ambitions is truly thrilling. I had an immediate conversation with [Karl] Darlow, but I’m eager to meet everyone. It seems like a really solid group, and I’ve heard wonderful things,” expressed Longstaff to Leeds United’s media team.
Having enjoyed significant loan spells earlier in his career, Longstaff made his debut for Newcastle in a 2018 cup match against Nottingham Forest and has since represented his boyhood club over 200 times across all competitions.
He acknowledged that it would have required a lot for him to depart from Newcastle, but he feels that the newly promoted club offers the ideal environment for him. “It instills confidence in you and drives you to repay those who believe in you. It’s a massive football club, akin to Newcastle in many respects. Leaving Newcastle wasn’t a decision I took lightly; it had to be the right fit for my family, and I believe this is it.”
“I watched nearly all the games and observed a team that was genuinely exciting to watch, athletic, and skilled on the ball. Every time I played at Leeds, the atmosphere was electric, always vibrant, and a challenging venue to compete in. I’m looking forward to having that support rather than facing it,” he added.
