Lucy Hamilton Appointed Captain of Australia's U19 Women's T20 World Cup Team

Sydney, Jan 5 (NationPress) Pace-bowling all-rounder Lucy Hamilton has been named as Australia’s captain for the forthcoming ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, which is set to begin in Malaysia on January 18. Hasrat Gill, a leg-spinner, has been designated as the vice-captain for the 16-team competition.

Lucy is set to make her second appearance in the U19 World Cup after being selected at the age of 16 for the 2023 edition held in South Africa. The all-rounder made her first WNCL appearance for the Queensland Fire in 2022 at just 15, making her the state’s second youngest debutant, and she debuted in the WBBL at the age of 16.

Bowling left-arm pace, Lucy etched her name into the WBBL record books by becoming the youngest cricketer to achieve a five-wicket haul, taking 5-8 in four overs while playing for the Brisbane Heat against the Melbourne Stars at Drummoyne Oval last November.

“It is a significant privilege to be appointed captain of Australia for the Under 19 World Cup; I am immensely grateful for the chance to lead our team. We are lucky to have strong leaders within the group, and I know I have excellent support surrounding me,” stated Lucy.

“I’m ecstatic to represent Australia once more; the World Cup is the pinnacle of under-age competitions, and as a squad, we are eager to seize the opportunity that lies ahead,” Lucy expressed in a statement released by Cricket Australia (CA).

This all-rounder finished the current WBBL season as one of the joint seventh highest wicket-takers, securing 12 wickets. “Lucy is an extraordinary talent and a resilient character who has rightfully earned the opportunity to lead her nation at the World Cup,” said Kristen Beams, Australia U19 coach.

“She has already showcased her capabilities on the global stage, and we are excited about what she will contribute to the group, both on and off the field during this year's tournament. Lucy will lead our squad and has unanimous backing from her teammates, although there will certainly be chances for all players to cultivate leadership skills throughout the tournament,” Kristen added.
