Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 19 (NationPress) The promising Indian tennis talent Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi is making significant strides on the global stage as she participates in the ITF Women’s Open W100 in Bengaluru.
The 16-year-old from Coimbatore faced a challenging first-round match in the singles main draw, losing in a tightly contested three-set match against the fifth seed, Polina Iatcenko. Nonetheless, she is still in the doubles event, where she teamed up with her close friend and fellow Indian Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty, successfully defeating another Indian duo to secure her spot in the quarterfinals.
Recently, Maaya has been active in tournaments across Mumbai and Pune, highlighting her ongoing development and experience in professional tennis. Her journey has been supported by a solid foundation in India and advanced training at the prestigious Rafa Nadal Academy.
Maaya's love for tennis began in Coimbatore, where her parents encouraged her interest in the sport from a young age. With access to quality coaching nearby, she transitioned from casual play to pursuing tennis as a career.
“I began taking tennis seriously at the age of 10. Winning the Under-12 Nationals in 2022 opened my eyes to the possibilities within the sport. It made me realize that I could achieve something because I truly enjoyed being on the court. My entry into the ITF juniors saw me enjoy a remarkable 25-match winning streak, clinching four consecutive tournament victories and reaching significant quarterfinals and semifinals. Winning the J300 in Delhi has also brought me closer to my Grand Slam aspirations, marking an exciting start to my journey,” she shared.
Despite her singles loss in Bengaluru, Maaya perceives this stage of her career as crucial for growth.
“I believe this has been a period of positive development. My current objective is to gain experience, compete against stronger players, and enhance my physical and mental resilience. I trust that my rankings and results will follow,” she discussed her recent experiences.
She also reflected on her connection with Bengaluru, a city that has significantly influenced her early tennis career.
“My first competitive tournament was held in Bangalore, an Under-10 event. Although I lost in the first round, I had a wonderful time and spent the entire day at the venue. I have always enjoyed playing in Bangalore. In the Under-14s, I achieved one of my best results here, and these courts have generally been favorable for me,” she remarked.
Looking ahead, Maaya is set to concentrate on clay-court training upon returning to the Rafa Nadal Academy, with her sights firmly set on the Junior Grand Slams.
“The atmosphere at the Rafa Nadal Academy is amazing, surrounded by fellow athletes while I also focus on my studies. It feels like a second home. I intend to focus on clay court play with the upcoming French Open on my radar. My immediate goal is to excel in the Junior Grand Slams,” she concluded.
