Maheesh Theekshana Joins Elite Club as Seventh Sri Lankan to Achieve ODI Hat-Trick

In Hamilton on January 8 (NationPress), Maheesh Theekshana made history by becoming the seventh bowler from Sri Lanka to secure a hat-trick in One Day International (ODI) cricket. This remarkable achievement took place over two overs during the second ODI of the three-match series held at Seddon Park.

During the 35th over, he achieved two wickets with consecutive deliveries, dismissing New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner and Nathan Smith. The 24-year-old then returned in the 37th over to take the wicket of Matt Henry with his first delivery, thereby completing his hat-trick.

Ending his spell with impressive figures of 4 for 44 in 8 overs, Theekshana demonstrated his exceptional skill in spin bowling and his ability to perform under pressure. His hat-trick marked the first for a Sri Lankan bowler in six years, with Dushmantha Madushanka previously achieving this feat against Bangladesh in 2018.

Theekshana's accomplishment places him among a prestigious group of Sri Lankan bowlers who have claimed three consecutive wickets, including Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Dilshan Madushanka, Thisara Perera, Farvez Maharoof, and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Meanwhile, Rachin Ravindra scored 79 runs, and Mark Chapman contributed 62 runs, leading New Zealand to a total of 255/9 in 37 overs, following a rain delay that shortened the match.
