New Delhi, Jan 19 (NationPress) The iconic Australian batsman Steve Smith has accepted his exclusion from the preliminary squad for Australia’s T20 World Cup, yet the seasoned player is far from abandoning his aspirations in international T20 cricket. Despite this disappointment, Smith is resolute in his goal to represent Australia in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The 38-year-old cricketer, who is currently excelling in the Big Bash League (BBL), confessed that despite delivering impressive performances, he was unlikely to be a last-minute addition to the national squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The former Australian captain has not entirely shut the door on T20I cricket, as he still harbors the dream of playing in the Olympics, where cricket is making a much-anticipated return.
“I always want to play for Australia in major tournaments. But I think that ship's sailed. I reckon they've got two opening batters who are performing well. I'm relaxed doing what I can here and enjoying myself,” Smith stated, as reported by Espncricinfo.
“My primary objective, as I've mentioned previously, is to secure a spot in the team when the Olympics come around. I'd love to achieve that. That would be quite remarkable. I'll continue my current form, and you never know,” he added.
Smith last played a T20I for Australia in February 2024, and since then, he has maintained an average exceeding 51 with a strike rate of 156 in T20 matches.
The Australian star has showcased exceptional performance during BBL 2025-26. Rejoining his team, the Sydney Sixers, after clinching the Ashes, Smith has amassed 173 runs in just three games. He also hit a century off 41 balls against the Sydney Thunder at the SCG on January 16.
With Smith's explosive hitting ability, the Sixers have positioned themselves favorably for a shot at the finals. Following the BBL, the Australian player will transition back to T20 cricket in the Major League Cricket set to take place in the USA during June and July.
