Lucknow, March 23 (NationPress) Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya led more than 500 cyclists during the 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' event in Lucknow alongside Girish Chandra Yadav, the Minister of State for Sports & Youth Welfare, Manish Chauhan, Principal Secretary (Sports), and Suhas Yathiraj, Secretary (Sports) of Uttar Pradesh.

Promoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of combating obesity and advocating a healthy, active lifestyle, Mandaviya stated, “Cycling not only boosts health but also fosters character.”

The minister undertook a 3-kilometre ride from Marine Drive (Samajik Parivartan Sthal) to Samta Mulak Chauraha, reaching 1090 Chauraha and returning, accompanied by senior officials from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), members of the MyBharat initiative, and representatives from the Physical Education Foundation of India (PEFI).

Hosted by SAI’s Netaji Subhas Regional Centre in Lucknow, the cycling event saw enthusiastic participation from young boys and girls, alongside over 100 athletes from the local National Centre of Excellence (NCOE), who enjoyed Zumba performances prior to the cycling.

Speaking to the press after the rally, Mandaviya urged citizens to integrate cycling into their daily lives to combat obesity and help reduce air pollution across the nation.

“Cycling not only enhances health but also builds character, boosts confidence, and shapes the future of our nation. It is more than just a mode of transport; it is a vital step toward a healthier, more sustainable future. By making cycling a part of our daily routine, we can enhance our physical health, lower pollution levels, and contribute to a greener environment.

“I encourage every citizen to adopt cycling, not merely as a pastime but as a consistent aspect of their lifestyle for their health and the well-being of our planet. Let us prioritize fitness, as a healthy youth is essential for the prosperity of both our state and country,” he stated.

Girish Chandra Yadav echoed the sentiment, stating, "Fitness is the cornerstone of a robust and dynamic society. To enable our youth to thrive both physically and mentally, instilling the values of discipline, hard work, and fitness is imperative."

In Delhi, the 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' featured Paris Paralympics medalists Nitesh Kumar and Manisha Ramadass. They were in Delhi for the ongoing Khelo India Para Games 2025.

Sminu Jindal, founder of Svayam, the official accessibility partner for KIPG 2025, also encouraged participants. Jindal, Nitesh, and Manisha kicked off the event, which saw support from PEFI and over 600 participants.

In Mumbai, Asian Games medalist Kishore Jena took part in the cycling initiative at the scenic Aksa Beach.

To date, this nationwide cycling initiative has been executed in over 5000 locations, attracting approximately 200,000 individuals. The movement is also promoting eco-friendly practices aimed at reducing air pollution across the nation. The initiative spans multiple states and Union Territories, engaging cycling enthusiasts, athletes, coaches, and sports science experts.

Previously, the cycling event featured participation from individuals such as Indian Army soldiers, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel, and notable sports figures including Lovlina Borgohain, Sangram Singh, Shanky Singh, Nitu Ghanghas, Saweety Boora, Rubina Francis (bronze medalist from the Paris Paralympics), and Simran Sharma (para world champion), along with celebrities like Rahul Bose, Amit Sial, and Gul Panag.
