New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) Union Youth Affairs and Sports as well as Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday spearheaded the Fit India Movement's flagship initiative, 'Sundays on Cycle', at Mumbai's renowned Gateway of India.

This initiative aims to promote awareness among the public about leading a fit and healthy lifestyle through cycling.

The cycling event, launched from the Gateway of India with over 500 cyclists, concluded at Girgaon Chowpatty via the scenic Marine Drive, as stated in an announcement.

The event aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent call to combat obesity, particularly among urban youth. Hence, in addition to promoting good health, the key message of this week’s Sundays on Cycle was to 'Fight Obesity', it noted.

Mandaviya remarked, "The PM's vision of a Viksit Bharat can only be realized if the citizens of the country are fit because fit individuals can contribute significantly towards nation-building."

He emphasized that the 'Sundays on Cycle' initiative seeks to highlight the significance of maintaining a fit lifestyle while also benefitting the environment by opting for a mode of transport that produces zero carbon footprints.

"I encourage everyone, especially the youth, to use bicycles for commuting whenever feasible. This will not only enhance their health but also positively impact our environment," he added.

Praising the initiative, Shaina NC stated, "I congratulate Minister Mandaviya and the Sports Ministry for this timely and vital initiative. Today’s 'Sundays on Cycle' was a 5-km ride but I wish it had been longer. The enthusiasm among the cyclists was incredible and the underlying message of combating obesity holds great relevance in today's world where many youngsters lead a sedentary lifestyle."

The cycling event was concurrently conducted at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, with over 170 riders participating, including Shivani Pawar, bronze medallist at the 2024 Senior Asian Wrestling Championship, and a gold medallist at the 2025 National Games.

Expressing her joy at seeing a diverse group of participants, Shivani mentioned, "It's very heartening to see both young and older individuals participating together. Fitness and sports activities are crucial for us and our families."
