New Delhi, May 27 (NationPress) Goalkeeper Mary Earps has made a surprising announcement regarding her retirement from international football, just five weeks ahead of the Women’s European Championship. This decision comes after she lost her starting position to Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton.
Playing for Paris Saint Germain, Earps has been a significant figure in English football, contributing to the historic victory at the 2022 Women’s Euros and saving a penalty during England’s defeat in the finals of the 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup.
Goalkeepers Hampton, Khiara Keating, and Anna Moorhouse will be included in the 26-player squad set to face Portugal and Spain as they aim for a spot in the UEFA Women’s Nations League knockout stages.
In her heartfelt message to fans, Earps acknowledged that her choice might seem illogical, especially as England prepares to defend their European title against France on July 6.
"I have made the tough choice to retire from international play. It has been the utmost honor and privilege to don this badge and represent my country," she shared.
"My journey has been anything but straightforward, and in true Mary fashion, this isn't merely a farewell - especially before a major tournament. However, I believe this is the right decision. There are many facets to this choice, and while the specifics aren't crucial now, it ultimately comes down to this: the time has come for me to step aside."
"This marks a new era for the England team, and I am excited to support them this summer. Ultimately, all you possess is your character. While this may not resonate with some, trust that I wouldn’t make this choice unless I was convinced it was the right thing, despite the pain it brings,” Earps declared on social media.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper made her debut for England in 2017 and has represented the Lionesses 57 times. After nearly two years away from the national team, she regained her position as the first-choice goalkeeper with the arrival of Sarina Wiegman in 2021.
Wiegman expressed disappointment, wishing that Mary would have played a crucial role in this year's Euros.
"I had hoped that Mary would contribute significantly to the squad this summer, and naturally, I am disappointed. Mary has articulated her reasons clearly, and it's a decision we must respect.
“Mary has made an immense contribution not just to the team, but to the entirety of English football. We will cherish those memories and honor Mary appropriately after the summer; for now, our focus must shift to the upcoming UEFA Women’s Nations League matches and the Euros," Wiegman stated during a press conference.
