Chengdu, Aug 12 (NationPress) Italian orienteering athlete, Mattia Debertolis, has tragically passed away after collapsing during a competition at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, as confirmed by event organizers and the sport's governing body on Tuesday.
The International World Games Association (IWGA), the local organizing committee (LOC) for the Chengdu 2025 World Games, and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) released a joint statement expressing their deep sorrow.
As detailed in the statement, Debertolis was found unconscious on Friday morning, August 8, during the men's middle distance orienteering event—part of the 12th edition of The World Games. Immediate medical care was provided at the location.
He was then transported to one of China’s premier medical facilities for intensive care. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, he sadly succumbed to his condition on Tuesday.
