Is Usha's Commitment to Sports and Nation Stronger Than Personal Loss?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) Upon arriving in Milan, the president of the Indian Olympic Association, PT Usha, expressed profound personal grief but reiterated that her commitment to the nation and the Olympic Movement remains her utmost priority.
The passing of V. Srinivasan, spouse of Rajya Sabha MP, occurred in the early hours of January 30 at the age of 64. Srinivasan collapsed at his home in Payyoli, located in Kerala's Kozhikode district, and was swiftly taken to a nearby private hospital. Unfortunately, he was declared dead upon arrival, with family sources revealing he had felt unwell around midnight and, despite medical assistance, he did not survive.
Usha emphasized that her resolve towards advancing Indian sports is unwavering, regardless of the personal challenges she encounters. She is dedicated to enhancing India’s presence in the global sporting arena and fostering the growth of athletes in various disciplines.
“I arrived in Milan after enduring a heartbreaking personal loss! When your dedication to sports and your country is paramount, nothing can deter you. As the IOA President, I am here to bolster India's role in the Olympic Movement and to promote the advancement of Indian sports,” stated PT Usha on X.
Usha's presence in Milan is for the upcoming Winter Olympics 2026, which will be hosted in Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo — the same location as the 1956 Olympics — along with other cities in Italy. Indian cross-country skier Stanzin Lundup is set to participate in the Winter Olympics 2026.
Lundup represents one of the only two Indian athletes competing in the Winter Games. The Sports Ministry sanctioned his participation without imposing any costs on the government. This decision follows the IOA’s announcement that he could not be substituted by Manjeet, despite a directive from the Delhi High Court. Lundup’s event is slated for Friday at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium.
Previously, a delegation from the International Olympic Academy (IOA), spearheaded by Dr. Makis Asimakopoulos, Director, and Alexandra Karaiskou, Head of NOAS/NOCs Relations, conducted an official meeting with Usha after the National Olympic Academy (NOA) was reactivated.
NOA acts as India's primary center for Olympic education, research, and dialogue. Beyond its academic and institutional roles, the NOA will work closely with athletes to assist with their educational needs, personal growth, leadership training, and understanding of the Olympic movement, all while they pursue their athletic careers.
