Will Aus coach McDonald get critics to have patience for Konstas?

Bridgetown, June 29 (NationPress) Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald has called on critics to exercise a little patience regarding Sam Konstas’ performances, as the promising opener is still in the process of acclimatizing to Test cricket.

Konstas, who impressed on his Test debut against India during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, was recalled for Australia’s opening match against the West Indies at Kensington Oval, where the visitors secured a victory by 159 runs in just three days. However, he faced challenges, scoring only three and five runs in difficult batting conditions.

“He’s reviewing his performance, and we’ve discussed how to approach similar situations in the future. Experience comes from learning and adapting from past encounters, and at times, he seemed a bit stuck,” said McDonald.

“He was either too aggressive or too passive; it’s about finding that balance and rhythm—something that’s crucial in Test cricket where the pressure is intense. He has a capable partner at the other end in Khawaja, and we ask for a bit of patience with this young talent as he adjusts to Test cricket. He is aware of his weaknesses, and I encourage all players to work through those,” McDonald added during a press conference.

Konstas’ technique has sparked ongoing discussion since his standout performance at the MCG, particularly concerning his ability to handle inswinging deliveries. Yet, McDonald remains committed to supporting him. “Perfect technique doesn’t exist, and if that’s what you’re seeking, you’re looking in the wrong direction—he will learn to utilize his existing skills effectively,” he stated.

“Our team promotes aggressive scoring—did he lose his attacking mindset at points during his innings, focusing too much on defense instead of applying pressure? Striking the right balance is key, and I believe he has the potential; he just needs time to adjust,” he elaborated.

McDonald concluded by mentioning Cameron Green as the long-term choice for the number three batting position, but also cautioned that Green will require time to adapt to his revised role in the Test lineup. “It feels as though he’s beginning his Test career anew due to a lengthy absence. He’s working on finding his rhythm at this level of cricket. With thirty Test matches under his belt, he possesses the temperament and technique to bat effectively anywhere in the order, and we envision him as our number three. He’s definitely capable; not long ago, he scored 174 on a challenging pitch in New Zealand,” he said.
