Did MCG Just Break the Attendance Record for Boxing Day Test?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Melbourne, Dec 26 (NationPress) The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has achieved an extraordinary milestone by welcoming 94,199 fans on the first day of the Boxing Day Test, setting a new record for the largest crowd ever for a cricket match at this historic venue.
This remarkable attendance surpassed the former record of 93,013, established during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup Final between Australia and New Zealand.
Furthermore, it set a new benchmark for Test cricket attendance in a single day, outdoing the 91,112 spectators who attended Day 1 of the 2013 Boxing Day Test featuring Australia and England.
With the current record-breaking Day 1, along with sold-out Days 2 and 3, the cumulative attendance record for the Ashes series, which stands at 271,865 (established in 2013), is now within reach.
As it stands, Australia leads the Ashes series 3–0, with one Test (in Sydney) left following the Boxing Day Test.
The inaugural Boxing Day Test took place in 1950 in Melbourne. Since then, Cricket Australia (CA) has maintained contractual rights to utilize the MCG until the end of March each summer, despite the venue frequently hosting Aussie Rules football during that time. Earlier this year, CA extended its venue hire agreement with the MCG through the 2030-31 summer.
Additionally, the iconic ground is set to host a unique one-off day-night Test match between historic opponents Australia and England in March 2027 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Test match, marking the inaugural instance of Australia’s men’s team playing a pink-ball Test at the MCG.
Given the vast crowds anticipated at the MCG from March 11 to 15 for the momentous 150th Anniversary Test, CA has initiated a ticket ballot for the first time in its history.
The ballot commenced on December 23 and will be open until February 6, 2026. Upon closure, entries will be randomized, and successful applicants will be informed by February 13.
