Melbourne, Dec 26 (NationPress) The chief executive of Cricket Australia, Todd Greenberg, has not dismissed the idea of hosting a day-night Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The MCG previously hosted a women's day-night Test match in January 2025, and it will also be the venue for the 150th Anniversary Test between Australia and England under lights in March 2027.

Since its inception in 1950, the Boxing Day Test has become an iconic event, and despite the MCG's dual use for Australian Rules football during March, Cricket Australia maintains rights to the venue until the end of that month each summer. Earlier this year, they renewed their agreement for venue hire at the MCG through the 2030-31 summer.

“Look, it’s not off the cards. We’ve been discussing the appeal of pink-ball cricket, which was impressive in Brisbane this year and has received positive feedback in Adelaide. March 2027 will see its chance here in Melbourne,” Greenberg stated, as reported by Fox Cricket.

With massive crowds anticipated from March 11 to 15 for the historic 150th Anniversary Test between Australia and England, Cricket Australia has initiated a ticket ballot for the first time in its history.

This ballot, which commenced on December 23 and will close on February 6, 2026, will randomize entries, with successful applicants notified by February 13.

“While I don’t have early figures, the process of running a ballot reflects the enthusiasm for this event. The strength of ticket sales and the historical significance of 150 years of cricket between our nations will create a truly memorable occasion,” Greenberg added.

“Those who attended the 1977 Centenary Test hold cherished memories, and our mission is to replicate that experience at the 150th in March 2027,” concluded Greenberg.
