Melbourne, Dec 26 (NationPress) The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) achieved an incredible milestone with an attendance of 94,199 spectators on the first day of the Boxing Day Test, making it the largest crowd ever recorded for a cricket match at this iconic venue.
This remarkable turnout surpassed the former record of 93,013, established during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup Final between Australia and New Zealand.
Additionally, this crowd set a new benchmark for the highest attendance on a single day of Test cricket, overtaking the 91,112 fans who witnessed Day 1 of the 2013 Boxing Day Test featuring Australia and England.
This year’s record-breaking opening day, along with the anticipated sold-out crowds for Days 2 and 3, brings the Ashes total attendance record of 271,865 (previously set in 2013) within reach.
At present, Australia leads the Ashes series 3–0, with one Test match remaining in Sydney following the Boxing Day Test.
Since its inception in 1950, the Boxing Day Test has been a significant tradition in Melbourne. Cricket Australia has maintained rights to utilize the MCG until the end of March each summer, despite the venue being frequently used for Aussie Rules football during that time. Earlier this year, CA extended its venue hire contract with the MCG until the summer of 2030-31.
The MCG will also host a historic day-night Test match between fierce rivals Australia and England in March 2027 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Test match, marking the first occurrence of Australia’s men’s team playing a pink-ball Test at the MCG.
Due to the expected large crowds during the historic 150th Anniversary Test from March 11 to 15, Cricket Australia has initiated a ticket ballot for the first time in its history.
The ballot commenced on December 23 and will remain open until February 6, 2026. Afterward, entries will be randomized, and selected applicants will be informed by February 13.
