Dhaka, June 13 (NationPress) Mehidy Hasan Miraz has assured that the recent changes in the ODI captaincy will not impact him or former captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, as both are committed to collaborating for the advancement of Bangladesh cricket.
In an unexpected decision, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed Miraz as the ODI captain for the forthcoming year. The 27-year-old will take charge starting from the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka next month, taking over from Shanto, who continues as the Test captain with Miraz as his deputy.
"I am not sure how the captaincy decision was reached. Such decisions are typically made in board meetings. No individual makes these calls alone. I believe we are all generally prepared mentally for any changes that may arise (including being replaced)," Mehidy stated during a press conference.
"Shanto's term as ODI captain had concluded (after the Champions Trophy). Discussions may have occurred regarding the Test team, but I can't confirm if the ODI team was included. Fahim sir (Nazmul Abedin - BCB cricket operations chairman) contacted me recently and informed me of the decision to assign me this responsibility, emphasizing the urgency of the matter."
Miraz emphasized his strong relationship with Shanto, having played together since their youth, including during the 2016 U19 World Cup. He expressed confidence that Shanto would adapt well to playing under his leadership once again.
"Shanto has been performing admirably in ODIs, yet the board's decision to alter the captaincy stands. We may not have met expectations in terms of team performance during this phase," he remarked.
"I believe this transition will not disrupt the team dynamic. We all represent our country. Such matters will not trouble Shanto and me. I supported him throughout his captaincy, and he will reciprocate. Our collective goal is to elevate Bangladesh cricket," he added.
"Shanto and I have been teammates since our Under-15 days. We’ve discussed our vision for the future of Bangladesh cricket, irrespective of who holds the captaincy. Teamwork is paramount. Our senior players have guided us to this point, and we now must drive the team forward. Although we face challenges, I am hopeful that we will overcome them soon," Miraz concluded.
