Bhubaneswar, Jan 18 (NationPress) Cooper Burns and Alexander Hendrickx emphasized that their team's priority is consistency following Kalinga Lancers' impressive 6-1 victory against SG Pipers, which secured their position in the Men’s Hockey India League 2025–26 playoffs at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium on Saturday.
The league leaders have now achieved a five-match winning streak, holding the top spot with 14 points from five games. Burns contributed two goals (8’, 23’), while Hendrickx also scored twice (39’, 56’). Additionally, Craig Marais (10’) and Angad Singh (54’) added to the scoreline for the Lancers.
Reflecting on the match and his team's progress in the tournament, Belgian drag flick specialist Alexander Hendrickx stated, “This was a strong team effort and a vital step forward for us. The team spirit is excellent, yet we remain grounded. We understand that results can fluctuate rapidly in this league, so our focus is on continuous improvement and maintaining a long-term perspective.”
Hendrickx, currently with seven goals in five matches, also underscored the importance of penalty corners and the teamwork involved in his successful conversions.
“Penalty corners are a decisive factor in modern hockey, often influencing match outcomes. However, it’s not solely about the drag flick. The entire team contributes to earning those fouls in the circle, and all elements—from the injection to the execution and follow-up—must align perfectly. When everything synchronizes, it presents us with a great opportunity to score,” he remarked.
Burns, who scored two goals in front of the home crowd, highlighted the significance of teamwork and effective execution in the attacking zone.
“It’s always gratifying to score, but our primary goal was to create better field goal opportunities and engage in selfless play. Both of my goals resulted from excellent team movements, and I was fortunate to be positioned to finish them. A significant amount of credit goes to my teammates for setting up those chances,” Burns noted.
He also shared thoughts on the atmosphere at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium and the team's mentality as they maintain their unbeaten record.
“There was no pressure playing at home; rather, it served as a motivation. The crowd was incredible and fully supported us. We aimed to showcase good hockey and entertain them. We recognize our advantageous position, but we don’t take any victories for granted. Every team in this league is formidable, so we approach each game with focus and determination,” he commented.
Hendrickx underlined the collective effort across the field that has been essential to the Lancers’ defensive strength this season.
“Our composure stems from the energy we exert as a unit. The forwards are diligent in tracking back, players are committed to putting their bodies on the line, and communication is constant, which enables us to manage threats collectively. We are improving with each game, particularly in defense, and having someone like Krishan Pathak behind us instills confidence throughout the entire team,” he explained.
With the playoffs secured, Burns emphasized the need to uphold high standards for the remainder of the league phase.
“Every match is critical for us. We aim to secure the highest possible position on the table leading into the playoffs. We are currently in a strong position, but there is still much work ahead,” he stated.
