New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) Charlotte Edwards, the head coach of Mumbai Indians Women, who triumphed in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), stated that the coaching team has focused heavily on preparing players for various match scenarios they will face in the upcoming season starting on February 14.

The Mumbai Indians, led by Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, became the first WPL champions in 2023. However, in the following season, they failed to reach the final after losing to the eventual champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in the Eliminator match held in New Delhi.

As they gear up for the 2025 season, MI has been diligently training at a facility in Navi Mumbai for the past six days, initially with their Indian players, followed by the overseas players joining in.

“It’s been a fantastic few days. With a majority of the Indian domestic players initially, we as a coaching staff have been able to dedicate significant time to them. A substantial part of our training focus has been on match scenarios, allowing us to simulate various situations that we believe they will encounter during the WPL. We hope this has provided them with valuable insights into their current abilities,” shared the MI coach.

“We have attempted to modify the parameters, presenting them with both high and low scoring situations – it has been incredibly beneficial, and I am genuinely impressed with the progress of the group. Comparing their match awareness and tactical awareness now to two years ago, it is on an entirely different level,” added Charlotte in a franchise update on Monday.

The Mumbai Indians will kick off their WPL 2025 campaign against the Delhi Capitals on February 15 in Vadodara. The franchise has acquired wicketkeeper-batter G. Kamalini, along with all-rounders Nadine de Klerk, Akshita Maheshwari, and Sanskriti Gupta during the auction ahead of the 2025 WPL season.

While the majority of their Indian players joined the camp in the initial days, the South African trio of Shabnim Ismail, Chloe Tryon, and Nadine de Klerk participated in their first practice session on Sunday.

In the previous season, Shabnim recorded the fastest delivery ever documented in women's cricket at a speed of 132.1 km/h, and also achieved the highest number of dot balls (97) in the WPL last season.

The Mumbai Indians will begin their WPL 2025 journey against Delhi Capitals at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium on February 15.
