Will the MI-RCB Showdown in Navi Mumbai Open WPL 2026?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Nov 29 (NationPress) The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 is set to commence with an exciting matchup between the two-time champions Mumbai Indians and the 2024 victors Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 9, as revealed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday.
Earlier, WPL chairman Jayesh George had disclosed the dates and venues for the 2026 season on Thursday, just prior to the commencement of the first mega auction in New Delhi. During the schedule announcement on Saturday, Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the tournament will include two double-headers in Navi Mumbai, while the final is set to take place at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on a weekday, February 5, introducing a novel aspect to the competition.
The Navi Mumbai phase will occur from January 9-17, hosting 11 matches before the tournament progresses to Vadodara for the remaining 11 fixtures, including the playoffs. The Gujarat Giants will kick off the Vadodara leg against RCB, followed by a rematch of the 2025 final between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.
Once the league phase wraps up on February 1, the Eliminator, featuring the second and third-placed teams, will unfold on February 3, while the table-toppers will advance directly to the final on February 5. This busy period will coincide with the men’s Under-19 World Cup on February 6 and the men’s T20 World Cup commencing on February 7.
For the first time, the WPL is being held in the January-February timeframe, strategically avoiding overlaps with major international fixtures after three seasons in the February-March slot. The Mumbai Indians enter as the defending champions, while the Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the only other team with a WPL title to their name.
The Delhi Capitals have been runners-up three times, and the Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz have yet to reach a final. Following the conclusion of the WPL, India’s all-format tour of Australia will commence on February 15 and continue until March 9.
“With the mega auction in New Delhi on Thursday enhancing and reorganizing squads, WPL 2026 is anticipated to deliver an electrifying season. Emerging young Indian talents are expected to shine alongside established international stars, ensuring thrilling cricket throughout,” remarked Saikia.
