Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in discussions at the India-Canada CEOs’ Forum on Monday. PM Modi expressed his excitement over the Canadian cricket team's participation in the T20 World Cup taking place in India, drawing an analogy between cricket and the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
During their bilateral talks, both leaders aimed to mend the India-Canada relationship, which has faced challenges following the diplomatic tensions related to Khalistani separatist activities in 2023.
While addressing the Forum, PM Modi remarked, “Many of you must be following cricket. We are all thrilled to witness Canada competing in the T20 World Cup hosted here in India. Just like in T20 cricket—where quick decisions, bold moves, and strong collaborations can lead to triumph—India and Canada are set to shape a promising future together. I invite you all to be a part of India’s developmental journey.”
This year marked Canada’s second participation in the T20 World Cup, having previously finished fourth in the group stage during their debut in 2024.
Canada faced a challenging journey at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, concluding their campaign in the group stage with four losses in a tough Group D. They were grouped with cricket powerhouses including South Africa, New Zealand, and Afghanistan, alongside the United Arab Emirates. Despite showing potential, Canada struggled to maintain winning momentum.
Their campaign began with a 57-run defeat against South Africa, followed by a narrow five-wicket loss to the UAE in a match that was decided in the last over. An eight-wicket defeat against New Zealand followed, and Afghanistan ended their run with an 82-run victory.
Although Canada showcased fighting spirit at times, inconsistency with both bat and ball took its toll, resulting in them finishing last in their group and missing out on the Super Eights.
