New Delhi, July 1 (NationPress) Former England cricketer Monty Panesar has advised India to be relentless with the new ball and to exert early pressure on the English batters to secure victory in the upcoming second Test at Edgbaston, scheduled to commence on Wednesday.
Despite accumulating a total of 835 runs across their two innings, India's bowling unit struggled to make a significant impact, except for Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed Zak Crawley's wicket in the initial over of England's first innings. This allowed the English batsmen to settle into their rhythm and attack as the ball aged. Panesar referred to this approach as 'Smarter Bazball' in an exclusive interview with IANS.
“England has demonstrated that they play the first 10 overs cautiously because the ball tends to swing. Once the ball starts to lose its movement, they accelerate their scoring. This indicates that they're adopting a more intelligent form of 'Bazball' cricket,” Panesar remarked.
“India must focus on taking wickets with the new ball; that's essential. If they fail to do so, they'll find themselves constantly playing catch-up. They need to replicate their success from Australia, where they effectively took wickets with the new ball. This is how Test matches are won,” Panesar emphasized.
Shubman Gill's tenure as Test captain faced a rocky start as India commenced their 2025-27 World Test Championship Cycle with a defeat.
Panesar acknowledges Gill's inexperience but emphasizes the importance of assembling a formidable bowling attack. He believes Prasidh Krishna must adapt to English conditions and that Kuldeep Yadav's role as an attacking spinner could enhance India's chances, allowing Ravindra Jadeja to secure more wickets.
“As a captain, Gill is still learning. I think Prasidh Krishna needs to focus on bowling a fuller length suited for the UK conditions, targeting the top of off stump. Wickets need to be taken in his initial spell, not later on,” he explained.
“If Kuldeep Yadav plays, Gill should deploy him as the attacking spinner and set aggressive fields to maximize wicket-taking opportunities. Jadeja's role as a defensive spinner will complement this strategy,” he added.
