Beth Mooney has thrown her full weight behind opening partner Georgia Voll, backing the world's top-ranked ICC Women's T20I batter to announce herself on the biggest stage when the Women's T20 World Cup gets underway in England and Wales on 12 June. Mooney's endorsement came ahead of Australia's campaign opener against South Africa in Manchester on 13 June.

Georgia Voll, 22, scaled the summit of the ICC Women's T20I batting rankings earlier this year on the back of a sequence of commanding performances, most notably a maiden international century against the West Indies in March. 'She has put a marker out there to other teams with the way she's been playing her cricket in the past 12–18 months, so I am really excited to see her take her opportunity at the top of the order,' Mooney said, according to the ICC on Sunday. 'She's got real clarity on her game and her role as well. She's a real talent, she hits the ball nice and hard, she picks up length really well, so she'll be a real threat for us for sure.'

Filling Alyssa Healy's Shoes

The context of this partnership carries extra weight following the retirement of Alyssa Healy — widely regarded as one of the most destructive T20I openers in women's cricket — earlier this year. Healy's exit leaves a significant void at the top of Australia's order as they chase a record seventh Women's T20 World Cup title.

Mooney acknowledged the psychological adjustment that comes with a new opening combination. 'For me personally, walking out with someone different in a T20 World Cup is going to be a little bit weird, but fortunately, 'Volly' and I have a pretty cool relationship as well,' she said. 'Hopefully we can replicate some of the cool things that 'Midge' (Healy) and I did at the top of the order in T20 World Cups and create our own story there … open the batting for Australia in big games, and have a lot of fun doing it.'
