New Delhi, March 19 (NationPress) Australia’s powerful opener Georgia Voll expressed that the forthcoming T20I matches against New Zealand represent a significant opportunity for her to step up at the top of the order and fulfill the responsibilities assigned to her.
Since December, Georgia has been on an incredible journey – scoring her first international century during her debut ODI series against India last December, which was followed by her T20I and Test debuts in the Women’s Ashes in January.
She later played for UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League as a substitute for Chamari Athapaththu, dazzling fans with her remarkable 99 not out off just 56 balls. Recently, Georgia was acquired by Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred draft.
"I was likely not pleased with my performance in the T20s during the Ashes. Therefore, this is a substantial opportunity for me to step up and play the role that I’ve been tasked with, and if given the chance, to provide a solid start alongside Moons (Beth Mooney)."
"(It’s about) extending the game a little further. In the first match, I provided a quick start, but I was disheartened to get out as I did, missing the chance to take the game deeper. That will be my focus – to maintain my positivity while also extending my innings to help us achieve a significant score," Georgia shared with cricket.com.au.
Reflecting on her brief time in the WPL, which began with a three-ball duck, Georgia noted, "I think I placed some expectations on myself … they recruited me for a specific purpose, to perform at the top, and after my initial innings, I was quite disheartened. (There was) a bit of extra pressure to make an impact in the last two matches, and I was fortunate that I managed to do so."
She concluded by stating that she will evaluate her cricketing summer once the series against New Zealand wraps up. "It feels great to know that my move to Thunder was beneficial, and when you enjoy your cricket, that’s when you play your best. (What I’ve learned) is about how I want to approach my game.
"I’ve always been someone eager to hit the ball hard and take risks, but sometimes, you can get caught up in the number of overs you have to bat. I believe I’ve discovered the approach I want to take, which is to be aggressive but not overly reckless."
"Being supported to play that role has been wonderful. It’s quite remarkable how everything has unfolded faster than I anticipated. I think at the end of the season, I’ll take a moment to reflect on it all, but first, we have a crucial series ahead."
