New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) The head coach of UP Warriorz, Abhishek Nayar, elaborated on the strategic acquisition of pivotal players like Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone during the recent Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction, expressing his contentment with securing players at the predetermined prices.
The Warriorz have constructed a formidable team, with the auction highlighting their acquisition of seasoned players such as Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield, Deandra Dottin, Chloe Tryon, and Shikha Pandey, in addition to Deepti and Ecclestone, as they strive to capture their inaugural title.
During an interview on JioHotstar, Nayar reflected on their most gratifying bid, stating, “Most players went for the figures we had anticipated. However, Sophie Ecclestone was an unexpected turn for us. She’s a marquee player who has consistently performed over the years. I had budgeted Rs 1.8 crore, so acquiring her for Rs 85 lakh was a significant surprise. The timing truly worked in our favour.”
Recognized as one of the best strategists at the auction table, Nayar garnered admiration from both fans and analysts after the Warriorz successfully assembled a robust squad for the 2026 edition of the tournament.
On the execution of the team's auction strategy, Nayar commented, “Aside from Amelia, whom we couldn't secure, we managed to sign nearly all the players we targeted. Shree Charani was a last-minute addition; she wasn't initially part of our plans. We anticipated a challenge in acquiring Sophie, and ideally, having (Sree) Charani alongside her would have been perfect since they bowl at different phases. Now that she didn’t join, we’ll need to reassess.”
After parting ways with Deepti Sharma, UPW successfully reacquired the all-rounder at a higher price. Nayar explained that their strategy was to observe how the auction progressed, and the set amount for their first retention was Rs. 3.5 crore. When Deepti’s name came up first, UPW exercised their Right-to-Match option, bringing the World Cup winner back for Rs. 3.2 crore.
“It’s rare to find a player who has delivered consistently over so many years. Our approach was simply to watch how the auction unfolded. In many respects, our initial retention was at Rs 3.5 crore, making her acquisition a tremendous value for us. Deepti has always been a priority. Such opportunities are seldom seen in Indian cricket. We are thrilled to have her back,” Nayar remarked.
