Mustafizur Rahman signs with Melbourne Renegades for BBL 16 debut
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bangladesh pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman is set to make his Big Bash League (BBL) debut after signing with the Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming BBL 16 season. The franchise turned to the left-arm seamer to bolster its pace attack following Jason Behrendorff's shoulder surgery, which rules the veteran out for the entire competition.
Filling a Big Void
Behrendorff, one of the BBL's most decorated bowlers and the tournament's fourth-highest wicket-taker, had been a cornerstone of the Renegades' attack before his injury forced him under the knife. His absence left a significant gap, particularly in death-overs execution. The club's decision to bring in Mustafizur — widely nicknamed 'The Fizz' for his trademark cutters and deceptive variations — signals an intent to replace experience with experience.
What Mustafizur Brings to the Table
At 31, Mustafizur arrives in Melbourne as one of the most seasoned T20 operators in the game. He has featured in 271 international matches across all formats for Bangladesh and has amassed 423 wickets in 331 T20 appearances at a strike rate of 16.9 — numbers that illustrate his consistent ability to take wickets in high-pressure situations.
His franchise pedigree is equally impressive. The left-armer has played nine Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) campaigns and eight IPL seasons. Notably, he was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad that clinched the IPL title in 2016, his debut season in the Indian Premier League.
His credentials against Australia were on display as recently as this year: during Bangladesh's ODI series in June, Mustafizur claimed 3 for 27 in Mirpur, helping the hosts secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
What the Coach Said
Renegades head coach Luke Ronchi expressed confidence that the Bangladesh international's versatility across phases of play would immediately strengthen the unit. 'Mustafizur is a proven match-winner in T20 cricket all over the world. His ability to take wickets in both the Powerplay and at the death is exactly what we wanted in our attack. BBL audiences love a player who can change a game in a single over and Mustafizur can do just that. Every ball has the potential to produce something special, and our fans are going to love watching him bring the theatre across the summer,' Ronchi said in a statement.
Mustafizur himself spoke of his excitement at the prospect of playing at one of cricket's most iconic venues. 'I am looking forward to playing in the BBL for the first time with the Melbourne Renegades. It will be special to play at the MCG as my home ground and I'm excited to join my teammates and bring my experience to the squad,' he said.
Availability and Roster Update
Mustafizur will miss the Renegades' historic season opener against the Perth Scorchers in Chennai due to his prior commitment with Dubai Capitals in the ILT20. He is, however, expected to be available for the remainder of the tournament.
With this signing, he becomes only the third Bangladesh player to appear in the Big Bash League, following Shakib Al Hasan and current Hobart Hurricanes recruit Rishad Hossain. The Renegades have now filled 16 of their 18 available roster slots, with England's Jonny Bairstow and New Zealand's Michael Bracewell joining Mustafizur as the overseas recruits for BBL 16.
