Wellington, Dec 15 (NationPress) New Zealand's off-spinner Ajaz Patel has been named in the squad for the third and final Test against the West Indies, which kicks off on Thursday in Mt Maunganui.
Patel replaces Blair Tickner, who suffered a dislocated shoulder while fielding during the second Test in Wellington.
The 37-year-old bowler, renowned for taking all ten wickets in a Test innings against India at the Wankhede Stadium in 2021, is poised to play his first Test on home turf since February 2020.
His most recent Test outing was during the third Test of New Zealand’s recent India tour in 2024, where he earned the Player of the Match title with remarkable figures of 11 for 160, contributing to a 3–0 series victory.
“Ajaz is someone we can rely on to step in and perform if needed. Bay Oval usually offers more turn compared to other pitches in New Zealand, and his ability to turn the ball away from right-handers is a significant advantage,” said head coach Rob Walter.
“Including another spinner for the third Test also adds diversity to our bowling line-up, complementing our seamers who have been outstanding in this series,” Walter added.
Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell rejoins the squad after missing the second Test while he recuperated from a hamstring injury sustained in the first Test earlier this month.
“Tom has made an excellent recovery from his hamstring issue, and we are pleased to welcome back someone of his experience to the team,” Walter commented.
“His leadership is invaluable, especially with a few squad members who are new to Test cricket. We’re excited to have him back,” he noted.
Mitch Hay will return to domestic duties with Canterbury following a commendable debut while Blundell was sidelined. Walter also expressed his views on the emerging wicketkeeper.
The fast-bowling quartet comprising Michael Rae, Zak Foulkes, Jacob Duffy, and Kristian Clarke will remain part of the squad for the concluding Test, with Rae making a strong impression in his debut in Wellington.
New Zealand Cricket reported that Kyle Jamieson is “progressing well” through his return-to-play plan for red-ball cricket and is collaborating closely with support staff as he prepares for a busy first half of 2026.
The New Zealand squad for the third Test includes:
Tom Latham (c), Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Daryl Mitchell, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Michael Rae, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Will Young.
