Hamilton, April 2 (NationPress) Continuing their supremacy in one-day cricket, New Zealand's youthful lineup achieved a significant 84-run win against Pakistan in Hamilton on Wednesday, securing an unassailable 2-0 advantage in the three-match ODI series. With numerous first-team regulars occupied due to franchise commitments, the Black Caps showcased a relatively novice team. Nevertheless, Mitchell Hay asserted that experience was never a concern for this talented group.

“There are some quite experienced players here, both on the international stage and domestically, which have been fantastic to engage with and learn from,” Hay stated after the second ODI. “On paper, individuals may not have extensive international experience, but within the squad, there’s a wealth of knowledge to draw from. It’s a fantastic position for New Zealand cricket, fostering healthy competition for places.”

Hay himself played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s victory, narrowly missing his first international century. His explosive innings of 99 from 78 balls was crucial in steering the hosts to success. Teaming up with Muhammad Abbas, the pair steadied the innings after a rocky start, ensuring New Zealand set a challenging total.

Reflecting on the innings, Hay recognized the early difficulties and stressed the significance of managing pressure before transitioning into an aggressive approach.

“Yeah, it was quite challenging at the beginning,” he confessed. “Mo (Abbas) and I discussed the need to absorb pressure initially before we could apply some of our own later in the innings. Mo was fantastic—so composed and mature beyond his years. It was a pleasure to bat alongside him, and we were able to turn the pressure back on later.”

Hay also praised Michael Bracewell, the acting captain who has adeptly led New Zealand in the absence of full-time skipper Mitchell Santner. Under Bracewell's stewardship, the Black Caps have not only secured the ODI series but also triumphed in the preceding T20I series against Pakistan.

“Yeah, he’s been exceptional. He’s an outstanding leader,” Hay remarked about Bracewell. “There are numerous small conversations that go unnoticed, but when he speaks, everyone pays attention. He’s a very calming presence, much like Mitch Santner, and a strong, natural leader. It’s been really amazing to play under him.”
